Description

Despite being a prolific poet, Emily Dickinson had fewer than twelve of her nearly 1,800 poems published during her lifetime. The few that were published were often heavily edited by publishers to conform to the poetic norms of the era. While many of her friends and acquaintances likely knew of her writing, it wasn’t until after her death in 1886—when her sister Lavinia uncovered a collection of her poems—that the full extent of Dickinson’s literary contributions came to light.
